The Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller became available to the general public in 1967. It was developed by Rolex as well as Comex. Early Sea Dwellers did not feature the Helium Escape Valve, which helped prevent watches from literally blowing up while trying to surface from great depths. The Sea Dweller is one of the most collected vintage timepieces with the Double Red Sea Dwellers pulling in big money at auction. The Comex pieces are highly sought after as well. The Deep Sea was released in 2008 and boasts depth ratings up to 12,800ft and is considered an engineering marvel.
